how I minimized my MAX-imalist Christmas decor. 11.23.24
Last year after Christmas, I went through ALL our Christmas bins. And let me tell you, being a former “gift store child” (my parents owned a flower and gift shop when I was little) not only had I accumulated decor from Christmas past, but also, it runs deep in my veins, and I had my own solid collection throughout the years. The more (decor) the merrier, however, I was struggling with managing it all and my storage space got smaller. So, I got rid of decor that no longer felt needed (would have been great to donate pre-Christmas). But I still had a TON left. I am working on being more of a minimalist, but Christmas time, I still resonate with being a MAX-imalist.
Our storage space is limited so I knew I needed to be very efficient about what we kept and how we stored it. Also, who really wants to spend time each year digging through bins. So, when I packed things up, I sorted the decorations, room by room and placed them in the correct bins. This was so helpful because I ended up with fewer bins partly because of purging and partly because they were organized more efficiently.
I then typed up labels for each bin. Now, I really wish I was much handier in the tech department and could have made printable labels, but honestly, this works for me, because the print is larger. After printing these, I used clear packing tape to fix them to all four sides and the top of the bins so it would be easy to put away and view the contents.
This year when I went down to dig everything out, the process was so much smoother and quicker. If you would like a link to my free printable labels, please send me a quick email with “Christmas labels” in the title and I’ll send them your way. They are nothing fancy, but they do help. Just print, cut out and stick to your bins with clear packing tape.
